HND versus BSc requirements in Nigerian jobs

A job listing’s qualification line is evidence about that vacancy, not a universal judgment about candidates. “HND accepted,” “BSc required,” “degree or equivalent experience,” and no education requirement are four different states. A trustworthy job directory should preserve the state it can prove.

Read mandatory and preferred wording differently

Words such as “must,” “required” and “minimum” normally indicate a screening condition. “Preferred,” “advantage” and “desirable” leave more room for other evidence. Do not delete yourself from a role because you miss a preference, but do not claim to meet a requirement that you do not.

Read the whole qualification section. The posting may combine education with a field of study, professional certification, portfolio or experience. “Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience” is broader than “BSc in Accounting required.”

When the listing only says degree

The word “degree” can be used precisely or loosely. Do not automatically translate it into either HND accepted or HND excluded. Look for an application question, employer FAQ or another first-party explanation. If the meaning will determine your application, ask the employer a neutral question.

An HND and a BSc may both appear in official processes in particular contexts—the NYSC’s published requirements for foreign-trained graduates, for example, name first-degree and HND documents. That does not override an employer’s stated requirement for a specific vacancy.

Present the evidence you do have

If the role allows equivalent experience or treats the qualification as preferred, make the connection visible. Use your CV and cover note to show relevant work, projects, certification and outcomes. Avoid long arguments about qualification policy; demonstrate how your evidence meets the role’s actual responsibilities.

If a professional or regulated role requires a specific credential, verify the requirement through the relevant official body. A general career article cannot decide equivalence for every profession.

Use search filters carefully

A useful qualification filter should return only roles whose source supports the label. A posting with no education line should remain “not stated,” not be classified as accepting everything. A source that lists both HND and BSc should be searchable under both.

Before applying, record:

• The exact qualification phrase.
• Whether it is required or preferred.
• The field of study, if any.
• Any equivalent-experience wording.
• Required certifications.
• The original source and application deadline.

This evidence-first approach will not remove every unfair or unclear requirement. It will stop a search product from adding a restriction the employer never wrote, and it gives applicants a clearer basis for deciding where to invest their effort.
